Description: The Contractor shall carry out detailed design, manufacture, deliver and install (including all required testing, verification and documentation) of the Active Cells Storage Pit Lids. The Contractor will be required to complete the detailed design of the Storage Pit Lids, to achieve the dimensions and tolerances defined by the UKAEA. The Storage Pit Lids consist of approximately 20 concrete sections totalling 400 tonnes and to be installed at the ESS facility, currently under construction to the north east of Lund (Sweden).

Work Package Description The European Spallation Source (ESS) Active Cells Facility (Lund,Sweden) will be used to remotely handle and process target station components before shipment to an external waste disposal facility. The Pit Lids are responsible for providing radiological protection such that the Pit Cells are shielded from maintainers in the Maintenance Area.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) Active Cells Facility (Lund,Sweden) will be used to remotely handle and process target station components before shipment to an external waste disposal facility. The Pit Lids are responsible for providing radiological protection such that the Pit Cells are shielded from maintainers in the Maintenance Area.

Scope

Detailed design, manufacture, deliver, install, and commission (including all required testing, verification and documentation) the following:
  • 6x Storage Pit Lids (consisting of various sub-sections, various sizes),
  • 3x PIE Cells Lids (consisting of 2 off sub-sections),
  • 1x Waste Transfer Hatch (consisting of 3 off sub-sections).
  • Installation of the Pit Lid locating features
  • Mounting of WTH sensor switch
  • Grapple lifting feature
  • Including, but not limited to, lifting eyes, locating fixtures & position markers etc.

Critical Success Factors

  • Affordable
  • Value for money by delivering within budget and schedule
  • Right, first time delivery during design, build, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover
  • Meets or exceeds all minimum requirements
  • Zero harm safety performance

Storage Pit Lids

  • The Storage Pit Lids are constructed from steel reinforced heavy concrete (3.6t/cu. m) and fully clad in Stainless Steel.
  • They are split vertically in interconnecting sections
  • Width: 2.9m, Length: 4.6, Thickness: 1m

PIE Cells Lids

  • Stainless Steel clad mild steel sections. Unlike the Storage Pit Lids, the WTH and PIE lids are horizontally split to rest on both the upper and lower Pit Cell aperture ledges of the civil structure.
  • Width: 1.3m, Length: 1.3m, Thickness: 1m

Waste Transfer Hatch .

  • Stainless Steel clad mild steel sections. Horizontally & vertical split to rest on both the upper and lower Pit Cell aperture ledges of the civil structure.
  • Width: 1.9, Length: 3.9m, Thickness: 1m
