Description: The European Spallation Source (ESS) Active Cells Facility (Lund, Sweden) will be used to remotely handle and process target station components before shipment to an external waste disposal facility. The Pit Lids are responsible for providing radiological protection such that the 6 Pit Cells are shielded from maintainers in the Maintenance Area. The Contractor shall carry out manufacture and delivery (including all required testing, verification and inspection documentation) of the Active Cells Storage Pit Lids. The Storage Pit Lids consist of 17 concrete sections totalling 400 tonnes and to be installed at the ESS facility.

Prototype strategy

A single pit lid section is to be constructed ahead of the full scope to assess ease of manufacture. Prototype is to be constructed to the same standard as production (including all testing, verification and inspection documentation). Detailed design will be provided by RACE. Successful prototype manufacture shall allow UKAEA to proceed with the remaining lid sections.

After an initial market enquiry further work is being done to reduce the cost of manufacture. An updated set of drawings will be published in due course.

Storage Pit Lids

  • They are split vertically in interconnecting sections
